Sometimes, life just isn't fair. You spend you entire adolescence battling acne thinking and being told that you will 'outgrow it' only to arrive in your twenties, and well into your thirties still battling the acne problem. Will it ever stop? Actually, it can be stopped. It's really just a question of knowing how to make it stop, and finding the right dermatologist to help you make it stop. Adult acne is just as problematic as teenage acne.

In fact, it gets harder. The treatment that you used as a teenager for your acne may stop working as you age. Acne that continues on into adulthood is typically called persistent acne and it is more common in women than in men. Women who did not have acne as a teenager may find themselves with frequent acne breakouts as adults as well. For women, acne can even make its first appearance during menopause.

The cause of teenage acne is the same as the cause for adult acne - excess sebum. We mistakenly believe that excess sebum is only a problem during puberty, but there are many things that can cause the overproduction of sebum. These include hormonal changes, the use of certain medications, changes in medications, stress, family history, and of course products that are used on the skin, as well as the hair.

In adults, however, acne can also be an indicator of an underlying health problem. For this reason, any adult who suddenly has an outbreak of acne should visit first their medical doctor for a complete checkup. Following this, if no health problems are found, visit an allergist to see if you have developed an allergy to any foods.

If no allergies exist, and no health problems exist, then it is time to see a dermatologist. Even if the old teenage standbys of acne control no longer work, there are options and solutions for dealing with adult acne.
