As Britain celebrates National Bike Week, cycling enthusiasts have been urged to check their home insurance policies to ensure they are covered against bike theft.
Figures from the British Crime Survey show that bike theft is rife in the UK. According to its data, one bike is stolen every 65 seconds in Britain with the average cost of a replacement at 337. So while riding a bike is good for its health and environmental benefits, it's vital that cyclists take suitable precautions.
You may not think of home insurance as the route to protect yourself against bike crime - but many policies do cover items taken out of the home and it is possible to add a bicycle to your cover with several insurers. For example, Halifax home insurance offers 500 cover for bikes as standard. If your policy places a limit on the value of your bike, you may need to list it as a specified item.
Check to see where your bike is covered. Some policies cover you against theft from the home, outbuildings or garden, but may not cover you in public places. If you want cover away from the property, you may need to specifically request this with your home insurer.
Even then your insurer will want to see that you're not negligent with the bicycle so take steps to avoid theft. Use bike racks where possible, preferably in well-lit areas. When not in use, keep the bike inside your home or in an outbuilding and ensure the door is locked. Consider using anti-pry devices and U-type locks as many bike thieves carry tools to easily cut through cables.
Take photographs in case a home insurance claim is necessary and if you're not covered by your existing deal compare home insurance polices online to find suitable cover.
